SPACE CREATE  is pleased to present paintings by Beacon artist Anna West.  This exhibition, curated by Judy Thomas, shows the breadth of West’s painting oeuvre over the past decade.  From landscapes, to cityscapes to her series ‘Film Stills’, the viewer will be taken in by the color, brushwork and point of view that she brings to each subject. 

Before she began painting 20 years ago, Anna West was a photographer in Brooklyn and San Francisco. Her oils include land- and cityscapes, and surf and beach scenes, painted live or from movies watched on TV.  When working from photos snapped on screen, she paints each frame into a new story, a new life.

SPACE CREATE is pleased to present Judy Thomas' new painting series MAPPING, in the main gallery at 115 Broadway, Newburgh, NY.   In this exhibition, Thomas shows lyrical works that explore the formal elements of color, line and form, revisiting 20th century abstraction through a 21st century lens.  Underlying the playful nature of Thomas’ new paintings is an investigation into broader concepts of chaos and chance.  

Thomas begins each painting with her own version of the surrealist technique automatism which has informed her work for decades.  As each painting develops, Thomas imparts a formal eye to the original marks and shapes, moving lines and forms to better serve the composition.

Judy Thomas grew up in the Midwest and began her formal art studies at the University of Iowa where she majored in painting, drawing and printmaking.  She studied at the Yale Summer School of Art at Norfolk and a won a Harriet Hale Woolley fellowship to Paris to study with renowned printmaker S.W. Hayter at the Atelier 17. She elected to live in Europe for several years and then moved to New York City to attend graduate school at Hunter College. After completing her MFA in Painting in 1988, she joined the mass exodus of young artists to Williamsburg, Brooklyn.  The pioneering, renegade spirit of the early 90's helped to shape the direction of Thomas’ art, when she began to create temporary, large scale sculptural works in abandoned warehouse spaces along the waterfront in Brooklyn.

Judy Thomas is known for her large scale site-specific sculptural installations that play with real and implied volumne and feature high-key color.  Her installations have been shown at in The Arsenal Center for the Arts, Brandeis University, Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art, and the Weathervane Gallery in Brooklyn.  Thomas won a 2015 Individual Artist Commission grant from Arts Mid-Hudson for her community-responsive piece MATRIX:RENEWAL. Her work has been featured in the New York Times, Boston Globe, Time Out New York, The Detroit News, Huffington Post and the Mid-Hudson Times.  Thomas lives and works in Newburgh, NY.

Space Create is pleased to present the vibrant work of Tiffany Smith.  Utilizing photography, installation and video Plant Life explores migrations of people and transplanted lives while creating a visual record of experience. As part of her exhibit Smith constructs an interactive photo booth encouraging viewers to photograph themselves within the lush settings she creates.

Tiffany Smith is a visual artist from the Caribbean diaspora who uses photography, video, design, and installation to create conceptually based work focused on identity, cultural ambiguity, and representation; particularly within minority communities. Her work examines individual narratives pulled from an array of multi-cultural influences, derived from her upbringing between Miami, Florida, Nassau, Bahamas, and Jamaica, and molded by her current home of Brooklyn, NY. Smith’s practice searches for new perspectives on dominant historical narratives and aims to provide insight into issues surrounding communities and how they are formed, defined, and identified.

New York-based sculptor and kinetic artist Steve Gerberich makes his Newburgh, NY debut presenting a series of interactive works and workshops at Space Create!

Gerberich will showcase his kinetic works and offer workshops for visitors to enjoy:

Gerberich’s “Gadgetry” Exhibit
Gerberich transforms Space Create into a clinking, blinking, swaying push-button world.

This installation of interactive works creatively composed of overlooked common objects involves pressing buttons and turning cranks to set his kinetic sculpture in motion.

Make-and-Take Sculpting Event
Saturday, November 12th and 19th 1-5pm
Gerberich will inspire and direct willing participants to sculpt their own mini-masterpiece from a smorgasbord of parts painstakingly collected during Gerberich’s nationwide travels culled from dumpsters, thrift shops, and dollar stores. Handmade sculptures will be assembled using hot glue “welding.” Children and adults can re-compose these objects into original works, while acquiring a new appreciation for creative reuse. Free and open to the public.

About Artist Steve Gerberich
From a pack rat's treasure trove of motors, toys, and other bric-a-brac, Gerberich is an alchemist of odds and ends and always searching for possibilities. A self-proclaimed lover of hand tools or any useful invention without a power cord, his Newburgh NY studio is brimming with machine parts, fixtures, and armies of antique collectibles where he turns discarded items into fantastical kinetic sculpture.

A sculptor with a B.F.A. from the University of Northern Iowa, Steve Gerberich began making art that moves when he relocated to New York City in 1985. He set up his first motorized installation in the gallery-filled neighborhood of SoHo, convincing owners of an abandoned factory to let him use their display windows. His work caught the attention of passers-by, including art collectors and delighted art critics.

Gerberich’s sculptures have graced museums across the U.S. and Canada and has been featured on CBS Sunday Morning, The Today Show, The New Yorker, Art in America and Sculpture Magazine. His work is held privately and in numerous public spaces throughout the United States.

About The Dress Project:

Over the summer I approached 19 women who live and/or work in the City of Newburgh and asked each to share one dress in her wardrobe with me. I audio and video recorded our interviews, and at some point I asked to borrow the actual dress. 

The women are incredibly diverse. What they have in common is their powerful, graceful, steady presence in the City of Newburgh at this time of great transition for the City. 

The exhibit lets you see the dresses and experience the women's stories through audio, text and video. I'm now in the process of creating a work-in-progress performance based on the material and using the dresses, which I'll be sharing later in the month (October 27).

The Dress Project is made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and administered by Arts Mid-Hudson.

Gita and Linda Oil and Fire

Gita Nádas and Linda Rahl Nádas,  daughter and mother, are both artists who grew up uniquely immersed in art.  Linda was involved in art from a young age spending much of her time in the commercial artist’s studios her father represented in Manhattan in the 1940’s and 1950’s. Learning so much about technique and art history as in the classical pedagogy of time passed.

Gita was naturally a part of the rich artistic influence Linda had cultivated along with Gita’s father Arthur, an immigrant from Hungary, who also was deeply involved and passionate about the arts.

Both Linda and Gita have studied with some of the most talented artists of the 20th century. Their stylized works speak to history and technique and screams loudly of their individuality and skill. There is a certain mysterious and whimsical elegance to their relationship with one another and to their shared histories that is very much alive in their works.   This exhibit, curated by Heather Renée Russ and David Ludwig, will feature paintings by Gita and sculpture and ceramic works by Linda.
